Ferri Project Progress

A meeting was held on April 21 to follow up on the short sea route.

Ensenada, B.C. - The Ferri project is continuing, for which a visit to the Port of San Diego was carried out by the Ministry of Economy and the Ensenada National Port System Administration, in coordinated work to follow up on the meetings and previous agreements with the San Diego Port Administration, in accordance with the last virtual meeting held on March 16 of this year, with the participation of the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine and authorities of the Ministry of the Navy.

The San Diego-Ensenada ferry project has advanced with the initiation of the feasibility study and the official dialogue with the U.S. Customs authorities and the Coast Guard on behalf of the Port of San Diego, towards a memorandum of understanding between the ports and the State Government, as is the interest of Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda, informed the Secretary of Economy and Innovation, Kurt Honold Morales.

During the meeting held yesterday, Thursday, at the Port of San Diego headquarters, General Director Joe Stuyvesant welcomed the State Government group, which included Secretary Honold Morales, ProBaja International Projects Office Director Gustavo De La Fuente, Institute for Sustainable Mobility (IMOS) Strategic Projects Coordinator Dinorah Gonzalez and Planning Advisor in the Cabinet Coordination Marisol Oliva.

Representing ASIPONA Ensenada were Captain Enrique Silva Sastré, Marketing Manager Amador Arteaga, and the head of the Market Development Department, Kaori Pérez Hirata.

The Port Director brought together key officials such as Michael LeFleur, Vice President of Marine Marketing, Jason Giffen, Vice President of Planning and Environment, Job Nelson, Vice President of Strategy and Policy, and Michael Grown, Vice President of Marketing and Communications.

Officials stated that the critical path must consider the issues of project profitability, type of ferry to be used, environmental evaluation process, U.S. Customs and Coast Guard authorizations for the transfer of passengers and vehicles.

Captain Silva Sastré answered questions about the adjustments and the structure of the dock that will be used to embark ferry passengers and De La Fuente added that the Port of Ensenada is about to finalize the ferry's operations plan.

Finally, the ports agreed to make contact with Mexican and U.S. customs and marine authorities to define the requirements to be met while the feasibility study is being completed.
