Hinterland
The Port of Ensenada's area of influence includes, in Mexico, the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora and Chihuahua, while in the United States it impacts Southern California and Arizona, and is home to more than 1,400 maquiladoras, as well as 1,114 producers and exporters established in Mexico alone.
The multiple vocation of the Port of Ensenada is supported by the diverse activities that take place in the area of influence. Among them are the industrial activity of container and general cargo movement, commercial fishing, cruises, marinas, sport fishing and other tourist activities. In addition to specialized shipyards and bulk mineral handling, among others.
In relation to cargo, these Mexican states have a high economic dynamism as a whole; between 2000 and 2004 they attracted $9,367.2 million dollars in Foreign Direct Investment, which corresponded to 10.4% of the total received by the country; in relation to employment they participate with 8.3%; they concentrate 8.2% of the population, contribute 10.3% of the Gross Domestic Product, and are home to 38.9% of the country's maquiladora sector.
The hinterland of the port of Ensenada has three border crossings in Tijuana, Tecate and Mexicali in Baja California; it also impacts another three in Sonoita, Nogales and Agua Prieta in the state of Sonora and an additional one in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. The railroad network amounts to 26,662 kilometers, and is operated by 6 companies; in Baja California there is a total of 223.2 km, the largest station is located in Mexicali and is operated by Ferromex, with a wide coverage to the south of the country called Corredor del Pacifico, there is also a direct connection between Mexicali and Calexico with Union Pacific, which has a reach to the entire United States, and even Canada. There is also a short route that connects the cities of Tijuana and Tecate via railroad operated by Admicarga.
Additionally, the area of influence includes the ports of El Sauzal, San Felipe and Rosarito in Baja California, as well as Guerrero Negro, Santa Rosalía, San Carlos and Pichilingue in Baja California Sur, all with different vocations, especially fishing and hydrocarbons.
Foreland
The Port of Ensenada is located in the Pacific Basin, a region that registers the greatest dynamism of commercial exchange in the world. Its strategic location in Northwest Mexico offers the opportunity to access the main ports and centers of production and consumption, with connections to 64 ports in 28 countries.

Likewise, the Port's maritime connectivity is due to the participation of regular shipping lines and lines with cargo charter connections, with containerized cargo services having the widest scope in terms of ports and countries.
Exports go mainly to China, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan and Indonesia in Asia; Costa Rica, Honduras and Chile in Central America; France, Italy and Spain in Europe; Morocco and Algeria in Africa. Imports come mainly from the same countries in Asia, as well as Nicaragua in Central America and New Zealand in Oceania, among others. The greatest dynamism is with Asia, due to the commercial exchange of the maquiladora industry.
